Offhand I would guess that it is harder to get your hands on a grenade or a stick of dynamite than on a handgun. True, there are other alternatives: Cho Seung-Hui could have beaned his victims with a rock, shot them with an arrow, whacked them with an axe or pricked them with a poison dart. But for quick, convenient, reliable mass slaughter using an easy-to-get weapon, guns are hard to beat.
