The origin of the term is chronological, but now it is a primarily aesthetic designation. Post-punk = Joy Divison, Gang of Four, Wire, The Pop Group, Public Image Limited.

Aesthetically, it refers to groups that transcended the stylistic limitations of three-chord punk, and instead incorporated elements of dub, disco, krautrock, and other experimental sources.

John Lydon of PiL, formerly Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols, is on record as declaring his distaste for punk as a musical genre, and his real influences are Dub reggae, "northern Soul" and disco, Captain Beefheart, Can, and Miles Davis's _Bitches Brew_.
