I remember the Paris metro as being dirty and smelling of urine. That was 10 years ago though, and maybe it was just having a bad week.

IIRC Stalin took the metro once. Several people were trampled to death in the rush to see the Vozhd. He didn't do it again.

Russia is really rich in gorgeous public spaces like the netro, the squares, VDNKh (the huge Soviet exhibition center, my favorite place in Moscow -- did you go there?), the Alley of the Heroes of Stalingrad in Volgograd. Huge and hyperbolic in public spaces, cramped and claustrophobic in private ones.
