I remember the smell too and even more amazing, the gravel under the rails
was teeming with rats! It did however run pretty efficiently and quietly -
at least compared to the London Underground. I also found the special seats
reserved for disabled ex-servicemen rather weird.

I remember the Paris metro as being dirty and smelling
of urine. That was 10 years ago though, and maybe it
was just having a bad week.
