I am not sure how many langauges James Baldwin read, 
but he was certainly one of the twentieth century's 
supreme artists.

And as far as I know, Patrick White also knew only 
one language.  He was as provincial as they come and 
one of the masters of the English language in the 
second half of the twentieth century.
