But Postel doesn't appear to be opposed to economic sanctions on Iran to make it comply with Washington's plan for the Persian Gulf in particular and the Middle East in general. The only concern about sanctions in openDemocracy revolves around questions such as, "Do sanctions work?" "How do they affect the strategic thinking and tactical calculations of Iran's power elite?" "Can we make the great powers' diplomacy more effective, so it can induce Tehran to do what they want?" Etc.

An article by Bahram Rajaee is a good example of that kind of liberal technocratic thinking: <http://www.opendemocracy.net/democracy-irandemocracy/nuclear_challenge_3263.jsp>.

It's an improvement over Bush's plan, but it ultimately goes hand in hand with it. -- Yoshie <http://montages.blogspot.com/> <http://mrzine.org> <http://monthlyreview.org/>
