Vietnam will export a total of 4 million tonnes of rice in 2007, down nearly 1 million tonnes compared to 2006's figure, announced the Ministry of Trade on December 27.
The main reason for the decrease in rice export quantity in 2007 is that rice production of the 2006-2007 winter-spring crop in the Mekong river delta has been affected due to diseases.
In 2006, Vietnam exported 4.7 million tonnes of rice to 100 countries and territories, earning a total export turnover of US $1.3 billion. Asian countries are Vietnam's key rice export markets.
