And American culture. In his intellectual/sissy roles for Howard Hawks, Cary Grant would don glasses. It was always a dead giveaway.

The Franklin Pangborn sissy was always the cultured friend of the heroine. Mitchell Leisen does some interesting variations on this with Fred MacMurray who is clearly the heterosexual male lead, but often exudes a high level of culture. But Leisen is one of the few (even fellow queer George Cukor wasn't as daring as Leisen which may account for the longevity of his career compared to Leisen).
