The first judge I clerked for, Walter Cummings, Jr., (now unfortunately dead) came from old money and was a cheapskate too. His father, Walter, Sr. had been chairman, I think, of the Continental Illinois Bank and first head of FDIC. The judge had the world's worst toupee. He drove a huge 10 year old Buick, wore cheap suits -- cheaper than mine! -- threadbare. The only item of value in his chambers was a vast carved table that came from the East India Company, family inheritance, I think. I can't imagine that he'd ever buy such a thing His furniture was all cheap gov't issue stuff I don't think he'd redecorated his Lake Shore Drive apartment -- he'd always boast what a good deal he got on on it (he did) -- since his first wife died; the decorations were obviously hers. I actually think he took pride in not spending money on show.
