What's the opinion in Poland on the Nazi rehabilitation going on in the not-so-far-away Baltic States? (The monuments to the SS, hero-worship of the Balt SS units, etc.) I'm kind of amazed that only Israel and Russia seem to be noticing this. (Yes, I know, the Baltic States aren't exactly at the center of the world's geopolitical attention -- but rehabilitating the SS, one would think, would get someone's notice.)
[WS:] I have not heard much about it, but this looks like a typical right wing strategy of bringing up highly divisive issues to enrage the public and divert attention from other issues. The "divide and conquer" strategy is universal, but the actual divisive issues are culture-specific: it is gay marriages in the US, and rehabilitation of the SS in Eastern Europe.
Not long ago I had a telephone conversation with someone in Poland and asked him what all these weird issues (cf. the witch hunting of ex-Communist "collaborators") were all about. He replied that democracy is a good thing, but only for societies that are mature and civil, but otherwise it is a mere platform for demagogues to instigate gullible and ignorant public. I agreed with that assessment.
