"Hippie," IIRC, was never a word that hippies used of themselves. I
always thought Time magazine coined it. The connection with older uses
of "hip" and "hep" would be hard though interesting to trace -- a file
of old underground newspapers might help. It's basically a lexicographic
undertaking, reserved for us "harmless drudges" who like that sort of
thing.
There came a time -- about 1971, I think -- when people who had been
hippies in the 60s started to use the word, derisively, of slightly
younger people who were still talking the talk, wearing the clothes, and
walking the walk pro-virili, at a time when the quondam hippies had
moved on to grad school (the MBA quest was still four or five years in
the future).
