Attitudinizing about what fools and gulls the common herd are is a source of innocent merriment that should not obscure the critical point that nowadays religion isn't just idiotic; it is *weaponized* idiocy. The biggest historical surprise of my lifetime is that the West/East resolved the cataclysmic nuclear threat of the ideological Cold War only to replace it with a wacky, neomedieval New Crusade pitting Christianity/Judaism against Islam. Dude, where's my Enlightenment?

I believe people of faith have the right to be as simpleminded as they wish in their own homes and places of worship. But when their malign fantasies have a toxic effect on public policy itself, especially international affairs, it's time to stop jollying the faithful along and tell them to keep their delusions out of the public realm.
