Yes, Balzac's "Lost Illusions" is almost like the illustrated version of
Capital.
Balzac was an out and out royalist but his knowledge of early nineteenth century economy, sociology, psychology, etc. is astonishing.
I belive Trotsky also got in trouble in the mid twenties for reading Balzac at party meetings.
If you're only going to read one thing by him, try "Lost Illusions." If you liked that, try the sequel "A Harlot High and Low."
Also interesting is "Pere Goriot," which is King Lear translated into the 19th century novel.
