I agree it's nuts to pick fights with the religious, but at the same time, there is no ignoring that religion acts as a tremendous barrier to social progress. Obviously, social welfare programs would be much better designed and funded if vast numbers of voters did not entertain the insane notion that their imaginary friend God "will provide," offering adequate protection against the vagaries of sickness, old age, poverty, etc. There is a sharp limit to how much the faithful's pleasant fantasies about the world should be indulged, when those fantasies pose a severe threat to the public's overall security and quality of life.
