Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 of Marx is the foundation for Marx's thinking on religion. Religion arises at a historical point of productive process and it would disappear as well on a future development . Hence it would have been relevant at particular time.

Opium sends the victim into coma of sorts and would not even perceive the exploitation to which he is subjected. He becomes oblivious to his poor condition and fails to recognise who his enemy is. That is the effect of religion on massess. Those who are intent on developing revoultuionary fervour find relgion inconvenient for their purpose and would start attacking it. For them spread of atheism becomes important. That would mean human being is responsible for himself and he could take his own destiny in his own hands and not recognise some alien God.
