BTW, on one of my visits to the Roosevelt family home at Sagamore Hill, the guide made reference to a curious item, not on display, that TR had received as a gift from a German legation that visited Sagamore Hill during his presidency. The object is a board covered with tiny models of the US battleship fleet of TR's day, with each ship color-coded to show what areas of the vessel were protected by armor plate and what areas were not. The unstated message: Should German and US capital ships happen to engage in battle, the Germans knew exactly what sections of the US battleships were most vulnerable to attack. And to think some folks believe Germans don't have a sense of humor.
