It really doesn't make any difference whether Carrol Cox is a jerk or
not. One  still is left with the obvious nonsense of single sentence
explanations of the psychology of 300 million people. And to indulge in
such pop psychology is to paralyze political analysis and action. It may
be personally satisfying to sneer at the dumb or the fearful, but it
doesn't butter many parsnips.
