Ah, So I suspect that what we have hear was a "revolt" -- whatever that means, could be anything from an attack on Roman troops to just a Rwanda-style pogrom -- by Jews in the course of which large numbers of Greeks were killed. The event was probably embellished in usual "the Huns throw babies on bayonettes" fashion by the Roman author, whom Gibbon then repeats.
