[lbo-talk] fight within Respect

One would surely need to ask about the political basis on which such gains were made? Word has it that the Respect coalition was predicated on a fairly radical shift to the right by the SWP and an adaptation to the politics of coalition partner the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) - a group who see homosexuality as a “sexual perversion”.

The MAB identifies unambiguously with the Brotherhood, a moderate, reformist, Islamic party, which builds its upfront public profile around welfare and religious education. Its basic politics are, however, the same as those of the shriller fundamentalists: the overthrow of secularism, democracy and women’s rights, and the introduction of a state run under Islamic law.

Of *course* it is. How could it be otherwise? What other small party of only three years old has established a raft of councillors, parliamentary representation and serious challenges to other parliamentary constituencies? This is only an electoral success, but it is one that hasn't been repeated at least since 1945. ___________________________________ http://mailman.lbo-talk.org/mailman/listinfo/lbo-talk
