And our classmates at Yale 75 and Princeton 79 were an intellectual elite? OK, at Tigertown I knew a number of real smart cookies who went on to distinguished careers. My friends and classmates included Madison Smartt Bell, the novelist, David Donohoe, MacArthur Prize winning statistician at Stanford, Andres Mata, now right wing anti-Chavez newspaper publisher in Venezuela (but very smart). However, my overwhelming impression at the time was that I was an oddity because I actually liked to read and talk about what I read. True, we didn't get the over-coached little achievement machines, more like the gentleman's C eating club preppies there to pick up social polish and lay chicks from Bryn Mawr, but it was not inspiring intellectually or politically. And there had not been a golden age we had fallen away from: it was pretty much the way F. Scott Fitzgerald had described the place in the mid '20s, except that there were girls there when we went.
