My friends and classmates included Madison Smartt Bell, the novelist, David Donohoe, MacArthur Prize winning statistician at Stanford, Andres Mata, now right wing anti-Chavez newspaper publisher in Venezuela (but very smart). However, my overwhelming impression at the time was that I was an oddity because I actually liked to read and talk about what I read. True, we didn't get the over-coached little achievement machines, more like the gentleman's C eating club preppies there to pick up social polish and lay chicks from Bryn Mawr, but it was not inspiring intellectually or politically.
