Public discontent with the Iraq war has slightly eased, increasing Bush's political maneuvering room at a critical point in debates over war costs and troop levels. According to a new Wall Street Journal/ NBC News poll, the proportion of Americans who say the war remains winnable edged up to 37% from 32% in July. Mr. Bush's approval rating on Iraq is 30%, still paltry but up from 22% in July.
In the fight for the Republican nomination, Giuliani continues to lead with 32%, but his margin over Thompson narrowed to six percentage points from 13 points in July. In the more stable Democratic contest, Clinton retains a robust 44% to 23% advantage over Obama.
