I've encountered brilliant, articulate defenses of each work by historians who seemingly knew what they were talking about. I remain blissfully ignorant of the whole affair, having read neither, but think that if I were going to read one, I'd probably read each, both to form my own opinions and to more fully understand any fallacies I might encounter.
