A few questions, not only to Chris:

Is it "eastern european antisemitism", when in 1946 in Kielce surving jews, may be demanding back the rest of their property, have been attacked by a crowd, resulting in 40 death? And the numerus clausus for jewish students in Poland before WWII? And the selling by so called communist governments of eastern european countries of tens of thousands "their jews" to zionist organizations, looking for people to populate Israel? And the campaign of the Minister of Interior of the Polish Peoples Republic, Moczar, in 1968 against the "Zionists" in Poland?

Is it "eastern european antisemitism", if in the protocols of the trial againts Slansky 1952 it is mentioned in detail, who of the defendants is "jewish" and afterwords started an eastern block wide campaign against "cosmopolitism"? Ore is this normal stalinist strategy? Ore normal stalinist strategy in use of old prejudice? Ore is it not "eastern european antisemitism", because Prague is right in the center of Europe and the Czechs - like the Poles, like the Hungarians - don't regard themselves to bee "eastern Europeans" at all?

Is it "eastern european antisemitism", if Lech Walesa in the 1990 presidential campaign asked the voters to be aware of the nose of his rival candidate Mazowiecki? (Mazowiecki is no jew, but his nose...)

And the story, told to me by my old friend Krystyna U. from Warsaw out of the years of german occupation, that the priest, who teached religion in the illegal underground school tol d them, that of course the germans have to go, but that they took the jews to the ghettos was not so wrong an idea? It was in late 1941, before the massacre of the "Aktion Reinhard" began. Many of the far right in Poland did not appreciate the killing of the jews, some even opposed. Yes, in no other country there was such harsh legislation against all those, hiding and helping jews, like in occupied Poland. But it is a fact too, that today the slogan of "Zydokomuna" is quite normal in large parts of polish political life. Of course - like in Russia - not in the press statements of the central government.

Is it "eastern european antisemitism", if the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" have been distributed by the same persons selling the newspapers and booklets of the Communist Party in front of the Moscow "White House" in the time of the revolt of the russian parliament against Yeltsin in 1993? Came this out of blue sky? "Pamjat' " never existed? And the liqudation of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee in 1948?

It is a far to serious subject to be discussed BTW on the occasion of the death of a stubborn russian chauvinist like Solshenitsin.

Sebastian
