I think it depends how you ask the question. If you ask in the abstract, "should abortion be illegal?" many more will say yes than if you say, "should the government punish women, doctors?" And people in the U.S. are a lot more likely to say 'there oughta be a law' than that the government should encourage or discourage this or that.

I'm aware that the poll said Mexico, although I have to point out that, what, around 1/5 of Mexicans live in and around Mexico City. I'm just trying to break through the reflexive tone--how could this be! Mexico's Catholic! Which covers up a whole history related to land reform, urbanization and many other factors that need investigating, frankly, more than religious affiliation or even Church power.

I already said I'm not defending the accuracy of the poll, and that I'm happy to see better ones. I just don't think it's as wildly wrong as you seem to think it is.
