What Klein says makes perfect sense. Consider four people who over the same period earn 15 dollars, 15 dollars, 20 dollars and 100 dollars respectively. The average earning is 75 dollars and three of the four people earn less.

There would only be a problem with what she says if the term "mean" were used not "average".
