But consider this--if Michelle Obama's grandmother eight generations back could look forward to the life of her descendant compared with her own, would she regard Barack's "90 percent" image offensive--or understated?

........................

Eight generations? No need to project back that far.

My great grandmother - who died at the venerable age of 102 - was able to simultaneously celebrate the fact that her great grands were doing things she dared not dream of and note, without missing a beat, the knack of White folk to (still) vacate a neighborhood when some vaguely defined brown tipping point had been reached or the habit White folk had of asking soul searching questions when a kid came home with a Black mate or Officer Friendly's curious tendency to assume her clean cut great grands were up to something because their cars were a bit too fancy.

In other words...

The fact that cousin Gerald is a fighter pilot and aerospace engineer?

Awesome.

The fact that the family of cousin Gerald's wife loudly and dramatically "disowned" her when she came home with that square jawed fighter ace, PhD?

Oh uh, maybe not 90 percent parity after all.

Great grandmom could see this very clearly.

.d.
