>There are two things leftists really have to
>grasp, IMV:
>
>1. "The systemic character of oppression implies that an oppressed group
>need not have a correlate oppressing group."
>
>2. "The conscious actions of many individuals daily contribute to
>maintaining and reproducing oppression, but those people are usually simply
>doing their jobs or living their lives and do not understand themselves as
>agents of oppression." Which means that people, often even when they think
>they are doing the "right" thing, can be reproducing oppressive practices.
Eli Broad, the 42nd richest person in the country, is also a major collector of contemporary art. He recently loaned his collection to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and donated several million to building a new museum where mostly works from his collection will be shown. The first phase opened last week. There's some great stuff in this collection.
But how does this happen? Of the 29 artists shown, only one is not white and only 4 are women. Leon Golub is there, but his wife Nancy Spero, who painted right along with him for 50 years and is still going, is not.
Number 2 above sounds like a great explanation to me.
