Read "The Autobiography of Peggy Dennis" or, as it was later called, "The Autobiography of an American Communist: A Personal View of a Political Life."
She lays out pretty clear the problems that the Popular Front mentality had for doing mass work/trade union work after the end of the Popular Front.
