I noticed when I was reading Gibbon that the lurid tales of Christian atrocities told by pagans in the early days of Christianity were weirdly reminescent of the lurid tales of Jewish atrocities told by Christians later on. ("They capture pagan children and sacrifice them in an unholy rite; then, they eat the child.")
