As I've said on the blog, and to others like Doug and Liza, "Mules" is meant to be a punk/no wave performance. While liberals like Alterman, Yglesias and Kos sing long, arena rock ballads about the future of the Dems, "Mules" is three-chord polemic, with some dark moods running beneath. Read it to Joy Division's "Closer" or PiL's "Second Edition." You'll see what I mean.
