You have been saying that, I've always feared you were right, and now I fear it even more.

But to be fair, Hagel has taken stronger stands against the Iraq war than virtually any Democrat in Congress I can think of. He's an absolute pig on abortion, gay rights, and a million domestic issues. But in this conjuncture at defense he might not be bad at all. Can you think of a Democrat for that position you'd like better? I'm not sure offhand I can. I certainly wouldn't prefer any of the obviously Clinton era candidates, and what other ones are there? It's kind of in the nature of the position in this country that it only goes to people who are up to their elbows in the defense establishment and soaked in the conventional imperial wisdom.

So maybe I'm missing something, but that actually might be a shrewd electoral choice.
