Hey Wojtek,
I might just be lucky but I found Ubuntu easy to install on a previously-Windows, three-year-old cheap PC and never had any hardware problems. I'm not especially technical.
You can get the free install disk, boot your computer with it in the drive, and test if everything works before you install. Probably you don't need a whole new computer.
