[WS:] Wrong. Santa Cruz. or rather its example, should move to everyone.

[WS:] And who exactly is going to offer those alternatives?

The very idea of cooperative (banking, housing, etc.) is self-help rather than being helped by an outside force. However, 'Muricans seem to prefer passive entertainment to doing it themselves. Case in point: Public Access TV http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-access_television which flopped big time due to the lack of interest, as people prefered to be spoon-fed by networks instead of doing TV themselves. Ditto for housing, banking or cooperatives. Perhaps this was a nation of self-made piooneers at one point in time - but that pioneering spirit is long dead. Passive swallowing raw whatever corporate suppliers dish out seems to be the norm today.
