Yes, you have to have a conception of what kind of society socialism would be. And people have to want to go there. What the likes of Carrol overlook is that a socialist revolution would be quite different than revolutions that have preceded it. In that, rather than the overthrow of a ruling class by another class which takes over as ruling class, socialism entails the elimination of class entirely. It thus needs to be the class-conscious act of the ruled class. Which is to say the vast majority of people.

Even silly buggers like me, who have never bothered to study Marx, get the significance of that.
