The rhetoric used to justify the Bear Stearns bailout has been pure
trickle-down: I cannot estimate the number of times I've seen the
dubious statistic that "each Wall Street job supports three workers in
other sectors" (http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/03/24/business/jobs.php).

 However, I have yet to see any respectable commentator note the
rather glaring inefficiency of filtering relief for low-income and
unemployed workers through the obscenely rich.
