I find this discussion very puzzling. Even if you restrict "junkie" to one addicted to illegal drugs, it's pretty clear that you can be a functional addict: meth for blue collar workers; cocaine, ecstasy for the upper crust, pot for everybody.

But if you include the legal drugs: alcohol, nicotine, and pharmaceuticals, then it's really clear that without drugs, no one could function.
