Even for the ones with stars in their eyes, it's no given that they foresee social democracy. I wonder if some are just giddy for a government to pledge allegiance to and aren't asking for much in return.

Nailed it. The _fear_ of socialism isn't what it used to be, but the smirking contempt that there is nothing to even debate is reflexive. Obama demonstrated this himself in the interview with Jon Stewart, ribbing Daily Show as socialist. The butt of that joke wasn't McCain, in my opinion.
