Point is, obviously Marx thought a post-capitalist society would be progress, at least according to any generally-used definition of "capitalism" I am aware of.
Some of his supporters have taken it to the extreme to say a nation MUST go through a period of capitalism before progressing into socialism, thus ironically putting them in the position of championing burgeoning new capitalist societies.
Pretty fucked up.
