$700 billion for the banking crisis; but what's the answer for America's health care crisis?

"Taxpayer, Heal Thyself"

How to use "functional foods" to help you stay well in the face of unaffordable insurance rates, soaring medical costs, and a badly broken health care system, with health educator Stuart Tomc

For millions of Americans, and especially for the 47 million men, women, and children who are uninsured, unanticipated health problems can be financially devastating.

Even affluent families with insurance, now faced with soaring out-of- pocket costs, often delay getting needed medical tests, treatment, and prescriptions until there is an emergency that requires more expensive care.

"America's health care system is badly broken, and the reality is it may not be fixed any time soon," says health educator Stuart Tomc, a former consultant to the World Health Organization

With Government's financial resources being swallowed by bank bailouts and war budgets, Tomc has advice for everyone concerned about with getting healthy and staying healthy:

"It's time to adopt a 'do-it-yourself' attitude'," says Tomc. "We as a nation need to start asking ourselves, 'what can we personally do to keep ourselves well'."

Tomc says our first line of defense against debilitating disease is nutrition.

"According to the former US surgeon General Dr. C. Everett Koop, approximately 75 percent of deaths that occur in the US each year are from avoidable nutritional factor diseases, says Tomc.

Nutritional factor diseases include America's biggest killers and cripplers including: cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and arthritis.

FUNCTIONAL FOODS; THE FOUNDATION OF PERSONAL WELLNESS

"Functional foods" are foods and dietary components that research has shown may provide a health benefit beyond basic nutrition.

"Here are some of the foods and nutrients which have been tested scientifically and shown to be effective in avoiding aches and illnesses and restoring health," says Tomc.

YOGURT: The American Society for Microbiology Research says friendly bacteria, known as probiotics, found in yogurt can ease stomach aches, improve digestive problems and help tame an irritable bowel.

HONEY: In 2007 the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine reported a study of 105 children ages two to 18 who suffered from an upper respiratory infection. Children treated with honey had better results than those not given honey. Researchers believe honey soothes irritated membranes in the throat and is known to have antioxidant qualities and antiviral effects.

CABBAGE, BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER, & BRUSSELS SPROUTS: In a review of 87 case-control studies, researchers demonstrated an inverse association between consumption of these vegetables and cancer risk, attributing their anticarcinogenic properties to their high content of glucosinolates. Verhoeven et al. (1996)

TOMATOES: Having a high concentration of the nutrient lycopene, a study of more than 47,000 men found those who consumed tomato products 10 or more times per week had less than one-half the risk of developing advanced prostate cancer. (Giovannucci et al., 1995).

FISH AND FISH OIL: Best known for their heart health benefits, research suggests that omega-3 fatty acids in fish may lower the risk of developing certain cancers, neurological disorders, and complications from diabetes.

"It was the Greek physician and "Father of Medicine", Hippocrates, who said, 'Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food'," said Tomc. "That advice should be the foundation of every American's health care plan, regardless of the economic climate."

SAMPLE INTERVIEW QUESTIONS:

1. What are functional foods, and what can they do for us?

2. How many dollars could be shaved off the national health care budget by switching Americans onto a diet consisting largely of functional foods?

3. Give us the three functional foods that in your opinion pack the most "health bang".

4. We know fish and fish oils are loaded with omega-3 essential fatty acids, a nutrient that is receiving a lot of attention at the moment. What are a few of the health changes that can occur when omega-3 is added into the diet?

5. How can listeners get a free sample of omega-3-rich fish oil supplements?
