What constitutes real work?

It's an interesting question, particularly as it pertains to more serious writers than me.

Between spouting off on e-mail discussion lists and writing the next Kapital, a number of contours exist: stream-of-thought blogging, more structured online writing, publishing articles, contributing to anthologies, etc.

And I imagine a lot of material originally spouted off on e-mail discussion lists will percolate up this literary hierarchy into the next Kapital (or any number of volumes that proud authors will consider to be the next Kapital).

Where do those of you who write about this stuff for a living draw the line between recreation and labor? Or do you?
