The question is, why is it important to determine what it is that makes 
us unique (subtext: superior)?

Is it to justify killing and torturing animals?

Why do we need to justify it? It seems to me that 1) the justification 
is even worse than the killing and torturing, and 2) the justification 
can never be more than justification, it can't attain any kind of 
absolute philosophic or scientific truth.
