I just wrote a review of Findlay, Ronald and Kevin H. O'Rourke. 2007. Power 
and Plenty: Trade, War, and the World Economy in the Second Millennium 
Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press). 

One of the intriguing aspects of the book was the proliferation of empires.  
I had never heard of many of them before, yet they had significant effects 
on the world economy.
