There's a (small, but exploitable) segment of society that believes that their consumer choices reflect on their personal aesthetic; Steve Jobs has tapped into this as a source of profit.

Los Angeles!

The name alone strikes fear in the hearts of gods and men. But, being made of a curious combination of transparent aluminum and collectively intelligent bacteria, I laugh at what makes normal men weep, and soil my pants when confronted with the most ordinary things. Fearlessness, wrapped in adult diapers, baked with an enigma topping.

But where was I?

Yes, Los Angeles!

Last week we (little daughter and bacteria hive mind padre) travelled to LA -- or, as Nigel says, "FutureGasmo" -- to visit a friend; a writer/producer (I'll call him Klaxon!) who lives in a house made from the bones of his fallen enemies. Or at least, it seems that way. Everything is smooth and white and polished and smells like vengeance.

He's a nice man, Klaxon! A fantastic friend; a terrifying enemy. Qualities I admire but fail to emulate. (Oh, I'm a good friend but where are the burning villages?)

Of course, Klaxon! has a Mac. It's not only a writing/communication/portable office tool, but also a three dimensional statement. As much as his Audi R8. In fact, the silver Audi aesthetically matches the silver computer. At times, Klaxon! -- with his suits from a parallel dimension and laser beveled eyebrows -- seems to be an accessory that came with the car/computer combo.

"This is the most beautiful computer I've ever owned" Klaxon! tells me from the passenger seat of the R8. Generously (or perhaps, lazily), he's letting me drive along the Angeles Crest. The ultra thin computer is in his lap on a cool pad; he's typing something -- an email to be sent via EVDO.

It *is* a lovely computing platform but far from my ideal which is a free floating black cube made from the remnants of a collapsed star and powered by the dreams of bio luminescent organisms.
