I suspect it's the Dylan factor. There were definitely some standards for garage band in the 60's. There are an obscene amount of covers of Hey, Joe for instance (which is a really terrible song), Them's Gloria, and probably quite a few Dylan songs. In addition, Cohen's Hallelujah comes to mind.... robert wood

P.S. Elvis Costello has done a lot of good covers in his career...
