The thing that's changed in DC in a generation is theatre. Very little then (see Frank Rich's memoir of growing up in the theatre in DC -- our experience too) and a great scene now. Some that kids depending on age will like, more that you'd like.
Outside of DC, many interesting places on Chesapeake Bay; Baltimore harbor (40 miles away) good for restaurants and walks, including the aquarium. Colonial Williamsburg (Rockefeller money put to good use) decorates for Xmas. Bon voyage.
