thing is, the lying can be easily caught -- with enough bits of information about you -- which can then be cross referenced with what is already on file. therefore, it actually becomes excellent data for mining: who lies, about what.

this isn't unusual in so far as there have been studies just on people's propensity to lie on surveys. IRRC, the NORC social survey contains a question about your zodiac sign. I asked why on earth that would matter. I was told that it was a check on who lies about their birthday. You might lie about a birthday but you don't think to lie about your sign. ha ha ha.

Doug: I only find it annoying that people want everything for free and refuse to see how they're paying. That's been going on a long time, sure, but it's especially insidious these days and contributes to the notion that writers, artists, etc. don't need to be paid for their work. it's on the net! for free! download away! it's free! whee! that would be great, in the socialist figure, right now writers, editors, artists, and musicians actually, you know, have to make a fucking living.
