Simplifying to try to get a grip on the shape of this unobscured by too
many different numbers.

In month A a bank makes 100 loans.

In month B it makes 50 loans.

Is this because it turned down requests for 50 loans out of a hundred
appliations?

Or is this because only 50 people applied for lans?

And how from the mere statistics can one tell the difference?
