Yo all my fellow political junkies--- I just met Steve Schmidt (head of McCain campaign, Karl Rove's less-successful protege) in line at an airport!

He was surprised to be recognized. Talked to him for a couple minutes. He looked like he was having a bad day (week? year? haha), so for some horrible reason I felt sorry for him and reached down deep and found something nice to say. Which I now completely regret. Now I'm having self-doubts about whether I'll be able to pull the trigger and off enemies of the People like him when the rev comes. Hmm. Total. Fucking. Goon. Seriously, he was like biologically a monster. More beast than man.

I should have tried to lift his blackberry. Imagine the tasty goodies in there!

Has anyone else run into any Enemies of Humanity in random settings like that? How do you handle it?

I am reminded of a story my friend Jamie used to tell. Jamie was a cook at a restraunt in Richmond VA, back in the days of Ollie North's VA senate campaign. The VCU young republicans had brought Ollie to town to 'speak', and afterwards took him out to lunch at the restraunt Jamie worked at. The restraunt was one of those deals where the cook is working right behind a counter from the customers, so Jamie was just standing there cutting some meat when he looks up and sees Ollie North himself standing there! As Jamie tells it, in that moment he froze and was trying to decide if the possibility of a Hitlerian rise to power for North dictated that Jamie should use his proximity and cutting knife to reach out and stab Ollie, and save History. But he didn't. And later when jamie described his panicked quandry to a fellow co-worker, the co-worker observed, "Yeah, hmm. I wonder how long it's been since Ollie North disarmed and then killed a hippie with his bare hands." Alas.

For the record, judging by the meathooks on Schmidt, he could have snapped me like a twig. Berkman and Frick all over again. I need to start lifting weights again or something.
