Why did I neglect to first mention Perry Anderson's Considerations on Western Marxism, which I can never recommend highly enough? It attributes the /cultural idealist turn in Western Marxism to disillusionment and despair within the progressive intelligensia resulting from the failure of the working class socialist revolution to materialize in the advanced capitalist countries. The Frankfurt School is treated prominently in this context.
