I noticed this at SOAS in 1993-94 and briefly attributed it to my
declining students. Then I noticed the same mistakes being made in
New Statesman. So, I thought, maybe the decline of this particular
set of lexicographic markings isn't so important. After all, no such
markings exist in the spoken language. Still, it grates every time I
have to read a paper that fails to make the distinction propertly.
